Measuring For Inside Mount

Inside Recess Fitting
Shutters are installed on the inside of the recess opening. This requires sufficient depth for slat clearance and also space for any handles must be taken into account.

What you need:

  • Tape Measure
  • Paper
  • Pen

Please note:

Take all measurements (in mm) where you plan to fit the frame.

Draw a quick diagram of each window to write your measurements on.

If the window has protruding handles allow clearance from the back of the shutter so that when fitted the handle won’t obstruct the shutter.

Taking the measurements:

Measure Width
Measure Height

Check for obstructions (trims, borders, handles, tiles) - If there are any obstructions within the recess, you could either remove it or measure in between to find your smallest recess width. If you are unsure you can contact us and attach a photo of your window so that we can best advise you.

Width – measure on the inside of the recess at the top, middle & bottom, make a note of each measurement.

Height – measure on the inside of the recess at the left, middle & right, make a note of each measurement.

For the final measurement of your shutter use the smallest width and height measurement. We recommend taking 5mm off each – this will give you the exact size of shutter to order.

If measuring for a Café Style shutter:

When ordering use the ‘Left Right Bottom’ frame sides option.

Width – as explained above.

Height – Measure from the bottom sill up to the exact height you want the shutter to finish. Take 3 measurements (left, middle & right) and make a note of each.

For the final measurement of your shutter use the smallest width and height measurement. We recommend taking 5mm off the width only and leaving the height exact – gives exact size of shutter to order.

Measuring For Outside Mount

Shutters are fixed onto the inside edge of the recess opening. Outside mounts are used where there is no window recess or the depth is limited.

What you need:

  • Tape Measure
  • Paper
  • Pen

Please note:

All measurements (in mm) must be taken at the front of the recess opening as this is where the frame will be fitted.

Draw a quick diagram of each window to write your measurements on.

If the window has a protruding windowsill, the shutter should be ordered using the ‘All with sill cut’ frame sides option.

Taking the measurements:

Measure Width
Measure Height

Measuring For A Bay Window

What you need:

How to measure all bay windows for L Frame inside mount shutters:

If choosing the DIY option: Shutters should be ordered using the ‘Inside Mount (L Frame)’ Mount & Frames option.

First you will need to print off and cut out a set of templates for each window section in your bay so that you can set them all out before measuring. When printing the templates use A4 paper and check with a ruler to ensure they have printed to scale.

Draw a quick diagram of each window section to write your measurements on and label each window clearly so the that when it comes to fitting you know which order they go in (e.g., Bay 1, Bay 2, Bay 3).

Taking the measurements:

Measure how far window handles protrude and cut all the templates to the right depth.

Important: The templates are the footprint of the vertical frames. Position templates on the windowsill in the bottom left and right corners of each window section. They must not overlap each other and they must not be positioned directly below a window handle (example layout shown in diagram above).

Width – Measure from the outside edge of the left template to the outside edge of the right template and make a note (mm)

Repeat for all other window sections in bay.

Height – Measure from the sill to the top of the recess in each window section and make a note of each measurement(mm). Only the smallest measurement is used for all window sections as all shutter heights need to be the same so that all slats and rails line up.

For the final measurements use the width measured in that window section and the smallest height measured in the bay. We recommend taking 5mm off each this gives you the exact size to order.

If measuring for a Café Style shutter only:

Left, Right, Bottom Frame with Sill Cut

When ordering use the ‘Left Right Bottom with Sill Cut’ frame sides option.

A post/wedge is needed in between each frame for extra support and to allow the shutter to be fixed securely. See image above for guidance on how to measure the post/wedge you’ll need accurately. (If unsure contact us for advice)

Measure how far window handles protrude and cut all the templates to the right depth.

Position templates on the windowsill in the bottom left and right corners of each window section, make sure the templates don’t overlap each other (as shown in diagram above)

Width – Measure from the outside edge of the left template to the outside edge of the right template and make a note (mm)

Repeat for all other window sections in bay.

Height - Measure from the bottom sill up to the exact height you want the shutter to finish. Take a measurement in each window section and make a note of each (mm). Only the smallest measurement is used for all window sections as all shutter heights need to be the same so that all slats and rails line up.

For the final measurement use the width measured in that window section and the smallest height measured in the bay. We recommend taking 5mm off the width only and leave the height exact – gives exact size of shutter to order.

When ordering use the special instructions/comments box at the final stage of you shutter configuration to tell us how many posts/wedges you need and the exact size of each.
